Jonas Unger

A few months ago I was asked by Tim Giesen if I would be interested in creating the new website for his childhood buddy and now Paris-based photographer Jonas Unger, whose work was always quite very present to me, mainly through his work for ZEIT MAGAZIN and his fabulous series of Gérard Depardieu that won him the Lead Awards last year. Of course I was all-in.

I think that one of the greatest pleasures and a privilege to get the chance to work for people whose work you admire. Then a “job” becomes way more than that as there immediately appears another layer of motivation: you want to do a great job so that the work (that you see so important to be shared) become more widespread and get a more appropriate platform with the result to be hopefully seen and appreciated by more people.

It was quite a long way to achieve this level of simplicity as seen in the end result. In a constant back and forth we have tried many different approaches, until we decided for the adaptable fullview of each image with the navigation sometimes brutally staying always on top of the content. Though it worked out fine in every major browser the mobile “translation” of the website turned out to be tricky. In the end I designed a special, independent version for mobile devices. Quick notice on the CI: the typeface in use is “Runda” by ps.tyle.lab provided by Typekit.
